How to Survive Mercury Retrograde

Mercury has gone retrograde. Try not to panic.

On May 29, Mercury went retrograde in Gemini – and it will stay that way until June 22. It’s also been dubbed the strongest retrograde of 2021 by’s senior astrologer, Narayana Montúfar. No big deal.

The next three weeks may feel like chaos. Miscommunications, technology mishaps, transportation going haywire, and texts from your ex are all to be expected during this frenzy-filled period.

While this astrological phenomenon may have you breaking a sweat, don’t let yourself stress too much over it. Although Mercury retrograde is commonly associated with mishaps and general disarray, this is the perfect time to reflect and reset.

We’ve got a few tips to help you survive the next few weeks.

1. Don’t text your ex.

Mercury retrograde has a funny way of making people feel nostalgic and impulsive.

Because Gemini is the ruler of communications, this time could be especially bad for reaching out to your former lover. With Mercury retrograde known for miscommunications, this is a double whammy that’s basically asking for problems if you text your ex.

Don’t be surprised if you yourself get hit with a flurry of messages or “I miss you” texts over the next few weeks.

Although it may seem like your ex is finally coming around, getting back together with them during this time is like setting things up for disaster. If you’re really considering starting a conversation, stick to just that. Don’t get back together during this period. Take it slow.

Otherwise, if your toxic ex comes out of left field begging on his knees for you to take him back, block his number. We call it growth. That’s the last thing you need during this time.

2. Be prepared for travel and tech mishaps.

Mercury retrograde is also known for tech and travel mishaps.

Don’t be surprised if your train gets delayed 20 minutes during your morning commute. Your text messages may not send, or maybe your email will go to the wrong address.

To avoid any avoidable chaos, give yourself a few extra minutes during your morning commute so you’re not late to that important meeting. Be sure to double-check any sensitive texts or emails and be sure you’re not sending a steamy message to your boss.

While you may not be able to control if the WiFi goes down for half a day, you’ll be grateful you took an extra minute to be sure you didn’t send an embarrassing message to your whole office.

3. Make time to unwind, relax, and reflect.

Although the inevitable chaos that Mercury retrograde brings may have you feeling stressed (which is totally normal), this is the perfect time to relax, unwind, and reflect.

Take a relaxing bubble bath to calm the fuck down, and sip a glass of wine. Make a mug of tea and light a candle while you meditate and clear your mind of the chaotic energy.

Grab a pencil and journal and jot down your thoughts, and make plans for the coming weeks and months.

This is the time to take care of yourself and take time to wrap up any loose ends you may have in relationships or different projects.

4. Set plans – but don’t make any rash decisions.

While this is the best time to relax, reflect, and plan for the future, do not — and we repeat, DO NOT — make any rash decisions.

If you are seriously contemplating quitting your job, wait a few weeks to make sure you have the necessary means to do so. If you can’t stand it a second longer and you absolutely have to leave, just be prepared for some possible chaos surrounding work.

If you responded to that text from your ex, foster that conversation — but don’t jump headfirst into a relationship. Otherwise, you could be looking at another messy ending.

Take it slow, set plans, but don’t do anything hasty with the impulsive Mercury retrograde energy influencing you.

We hope you’re able to survive Mercury retrograde with as little chaos as possible.

Although some tech mishaps or miscommunications may be inevitable, by taking it slow, relaxing, and reflecting, you should make it just fine until the planet goes direct.
